Neuroscience is the science of the brain and the nervous system, and how people think. They work with things like Alzheimer’s disease, autism, and other nervous system problems. Because of Neuroscience, we understand more about Down syndrome, ADHS, and how addiction affects the brain.
One of the most interesting types of Neuroscience is the study of the brain and its impact on emotions. Early scientists thought that emotions fell outside the realm of the brain and could not be trusted at all, and they were often too subjective and vague to base decisions on. Basically, the scientists wanted to focus on functions that could be measured, such as learning and memory.
However, a revolution soon came to that idea when people began figuring out that the brain is always influenced by some emotion. This happens whether we are aware of it or not. This is called Affective Neuroscience and focuses on how our emotions are organized within the brain, and why those emotions create feelings.
Every single emotion has the potential to be unlocked in the brain, but we feel emotions due to stimuli. No one ever wakes up feeling sad or happy just because. They feel happy because it’s their birthday or sad because it’s raining outside. Humans have the potential to feel every single emotion they have, but it’s only when something happens that we feel the emotion. We don’t feel anything without a reason too.
When we feel emotions and choose to express them, then the brain reacts in a certain way and Affective Neuroscience is the study of what the brain does. Then neuroscience and psychiatry resources are used to help treat mental illnesses as a result of emotions, for example, depression.
There’s still a lot that we don’t know about the brain, but neuroscientists are working to answer all the questions and it’s because of them that we know all we do.
